Bonding a sink? What you need to know

AKA equipotential bonding.

It takes a current from an electrical source and secures it to the sink by the bonding tabs that are generally found at the back of the sink. You check if the sink is bonded by seeing if there is a green/yellow (see image) wire going from a power source underneath the cabinet, to the sink. This is also known as ‘earthing’.

It was a legal requirement to bond sinks (years ago) in New Zealand, but it isn’t considered a legal requirement under the NZ Electrical Standards now. But we request it on all our sinks as this avoids the sink from reacting between the water and any copper the water comes across in the process of the water getting to the sink, like copper piping, taps, etc. This reaction can cause discoloration/ ‘water marks’- white-coloured spots caused by hard mineral-rich water that is left on your stainless steel sink and then evaporates leaving behind a dirty residue on the surface. The closer you are to seawater, thermals, etc., can all affect how quickly/heavily this forms as well. All stainless steel sinks are required to be bonded for warranty purposes.
